Update from Fortaleza

Pastor Elissandro – reporting about the mission congregation at Fortaleza / Ceara Igreja Reformada do Grande Recife

The congregation currently has a total of thirty communicant members and seventeen baptised members, for a total of 47 members. At the end of 2019, an entire family (two communicant members and two baptised members) was re-admitted into the communion of the church. On September 20, 2020, three young people professed faith in Christ, and it was a moment of great joy for our congregation.

We currently have a group of four catechumens, two of whom are baptised members. This group is receiving a series of studies in the Belgic Confession taught by the minister of the Word and the elder. They are also encouraged to meet together faithfully for public worship to receive instruction in the Heidelberg Catechism. Our prayer is that they will remain strong and come to profess their faith in the coming year.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.

Acts 16:5

We currently have a total of four office-bearers – a minister of the Word, an elder, and two deacons. One brother completed his term as an office-bearer at the end of 2019. In addition to the office-bearers, we have at least four men in the congregation who can be trained for the offices. Our idea was to start classes in March 2020, but this was interrupted due to the pandemic. We should start office-bearer training in October 2020. We will start by studying the IRB Church Order, and then we will study the book “A Shepherd’s Heart” We will also use some articles from the “Diakonia” website and its electronic magazines.

We express our gratitude to the council of the Reformed Church of Grande Recife for all support of pastoral oversight, and also the federation of the IRB and the sister church of Aldergrove for the financial support which covers part of the pastor’s support. From August 2019 to August 2020, part of the minister of the Word’s support came from the Federation.
